TWO MORE CHAPTERS AND IT’S FINISHED…
I can’t believe it’s July. I’m sure the last time I looked out of my window in Clerkenwell, it was January and there was snow on the dome of St Paul’s, pigeons shivering on my balcony, dead Christmas trees at every corner and 30% off everything in the shops including (it had been a bad year) the shopkeepers. I’ve been working so hard this year that my social life has given up the ghost and that’s sad because the ghost was my only friend. And what have I got to show for it? Well, quite a lot, now you mention it.
Let’s start with the main news. The ninth Alex Rider novel is two chapters from the end! As usual, visitors to my website are going to know more about it than anyone else – including my publishers who haven’t seen a word of it yet. So…
SCORPIA RISING starts in the British Museum in London. Then it moves to a place called the Siwa Oasis in Egypt, in the middle of the Sahara desert, where we meet Kalid Aziz Al-Kazim who is without doubt the nastiest villain I’ve ever created. He worked for Saddam Hussein when he was fourteen. He graduated to Al Qaeda. Now he’s in business for himself. There are actually three villains in this book. One of them is what you might call an old friend – brought back by popular demand. The other is a teacher at an international school in Cairo which is where Alex is sent after an assassin in London tries to…but I mustn’t give too much away.
From Egypt we go to the River Seine in Paris where our old friends, Scorpia, are having a high-level meeting. Then we’re in Gibralter. And finally – in Chapter 7 – we catch up with Alex in England. He’s fifteen in this book and you’ll see almost at once that everything has changed, particularly his relationship with Jack.
SCORPIA RISING has a very twisty plot with a lot of surprises, not all of them pleasant. A few more things… You will come across the Smithers’s last gadget and learn something about Smithers that you never knew before. You will see Alan Blunt in a completely new light. One character who has been in all eight previous books will die. The ending is fairly shocking. And when you get to the end you will be in no doubt at all that this is THE LAST ALEX RIDER BOOK EVER. (Well, I’m still going to write about Yassen and I do have one surprise up my sleeve, several years down the line – but this is the last in the series.) I’m really pleased with the way it’s turned out. I think it’s the best of the lot – perhaps the best book I’ve ever written.
Oh yes – and as a way of saying sorry for taking so long to blog, I’ve done something special. The first chapter of the new book, which nobody in the world has yet read, is hidden somewhere on this site. Just follow the clues…
What else to tell you about this year?
JANUARY – I came back from Antigua where I’d been on holiday. The high point of the month was appearing on a political show on the radio called “Any Questions”. I was sick with nerves and didn’t sleep for a week. Every day I read ten newspapers and magazines. All in all it was a terrifying experience but it went well and they said they’d ask me back. I also judged a poetry competition for Fairtrade chocolate company – Divine Chocolate. They gave me so many bars of chocolate for doing this that I have been eating it ever since and have become enormously fat. Well, not enormously. But I’ve got to stop! I can’t take any more…
FEBRUARY- I was meant to go to Cairo to research the Alex Rider book but a volcano blew up somewhere and I couldn’t leave. Instead, I visited the Royal Ballet School in Richmond Park which was a lot of fun. Can you imagine being a ballet dancer at fourteen? It must be tough, particularly if you have feet like mine. But the kids I met were really nice, very talented and much more ordinary than I expected (I mean that in a nice way). I also became a patron of an anti-bullying charity called Kidscape. I don’t like bullies. It was one of the reasons I disliked my grandmother.
MARCH – I did a book visit to Germany and had much more fun meeting the Germans than, say, the England football team. It was odd, being the writer of Foyle’s War, to visit Koln, which was almost bombed out of existence by the RAF during the war. The cathedral (very beautiful) is the only old building that’s left. Why didn’t the RAF bomb it? I thought it was because they thought it was too old and lovely to destroy – but actually they used it as a landmark on their way to Hanover and so needed to keep it standing. The war ended 65 years ago. Is that a very long time? Or is it actually fairly recent?
APRIL – A visit to the dentist on April 8th. It turns out that I have the same dentist as Simon Cowell. Should I be mentioning this? I finally got to Egypt in April and had the most amazing time, planning the 9th Alex. I walked through the covered market (there’s a major chase in the book) and walked along the banks of the Nile (a huge explosion). I went into the Sahara Desert and stayed in the most extraordinary eco hotel with no electricity, no air conditioning. I drove in a 4×4 shooting up and down the sand dunes. I saw camels and strange desert foxes. You can read about my adventures in the Daily Telegraph as I wrote an article about it. Finally, back in Cairo, I had a fantastic evening at the British embassy, where I was invited to dinner. Sipping gin and tonic on the balcony with the sun setting and imams calling for evening prayer from the mosques, I had one of those rare moments when I thought I’d really arrived, that life couldn’t get any better. And I was right. It didn’t.
MAY – I gave a talk at the Lincoln festival. I went to York University and took a class there for media students. I was meant to go to Malta but the volcano blew up a second time so I couldn’t.
JUNE – I’ve started going to the gym again as my dog (Lucky) is now too old to walk properly. I take him out for an hour in Regents Park but it’s a bit of a drag in every sense. My trainer is called Phil – or Phil the Drill, which is my name for him. He is insane about fitness. All he talks about is muscles, blood circulation, running, cycling, swimming, climbing, not eating, not drinking, avoiding anything you actually enjoy. After training hard with him, I think I have developed a small muscle on my knee. Or possibly it’s a wart.
JULY – Well, that’s where we are now and I’ve just got back from Bantry in the south of Ireland where I was a speaker at a very enjoyable festival. I don’t think there’s anyone more friendly on the planet than the Irish…this is certainly true of the ones I met with just two exceptions. I actually met the two people who created and run this website. Yes, Xero and his partner were waiting for me at a hotel near Cork airport – the Radisson. It’s called the Radisson Blue, actually, which is strange because it was all a murky sort of brown. Anyway, they gave me a hard time, complaining that I never wrote anything for the site and insisting that I go straight home and do this. I’ve known these two guys for a long time but we’d never met before and apparently I’m not allowed to describe them (except that I will say that one of them was wearing a striped jersey and reminded me a bit of a French mime artist…I kept on expecting him to do that thing with an “invisible” wall). They also run websites for Darren Shan and Eoin Colfer and (aaaagh…) Charlie Higson. They assure me that my website is the best, but they would, wouldn’t they.
OK guys. I’ve written 1472 words. Can I go to bed now?

Just a bit of news about the future. My next book comes out in October. It’s a collection of horror stories called MORE BLOODY HOROWITZ and I got sent a copy last week. It looks a bit like an old-fashioned comic – ie retro – and it’ll certainly stand out on the shelf. I do like a lot of the stories in it. My favourites are probably ROBO-NANNY (I bet you don’t guess the twist at the end) and BET YOUR LIFE which is all about reality TV. These are the first sci-fi stories I’ve ever written. It’s nice to be doing something new. You’ll also find a story that I’ve mentioned before: THE MAN WHO KILLED DARREN SHAN. You probably know that he killed me off in his book, WOLF ISLAND. Here, at last, is my revenge.
I’m also working on a new 5-part series for ITV, set in Suffolk and London and shooting this autumn.
I have more trips coming up…to Jordan where I’m going on a sort of Tintin holiday – which is to say, I’m following in the footsteps of Tintin, riding camels and horses across the desert and (I’m not sure how realistic they’re being) getting shot at. I’m spending a week in Hong Kong at another book fair. And I have a three week break in Crete where I’ll finish SCORPIA RISING – by which I mean, I’ll give it a final polish before handing it over to the publishers. Publication date is probably going to be on my birthday – April 5th 2011.
That’s it for now. I hope you find the first chapter. I hope you enjoy it. Please don’t tell anyone else it’s there as I’m almost certain to get into trouble. And, despite what I said, I had a good meeting with Xero over a pint of Murphy’s and a fairly terrible cheese and onion sandwich so you can expect lots of new things on this site.

Every time I see an article about the the last book of the Alex Rider series my stomach twists just thinking about UR AMAZING series ending! I wish they could go on forever!!
I just read the first chapter of Scorpia Rising. It makes me sad to think that the Alex Rider adventures will be over, but when I finished reading that first chapter, I screamed: Horowitz, you’re a genius! P.S I own the Stombreaker movie, and I was wondering if there’s any chance of a Point Blank (ou Point Blanc en français) movie coming out any time soon.

So, I am in love with Alex Rider. It was these books that inspired me to start writing. I am now 17 and have my own book published for teen reluctant readers. I am both excited and upset that this will be the last Alex Rider book, as it is an exciting adventure for my mind to take. And on top of that I descover that this book will be set in my favourite place in the whole world; Egypt. Thank you so much Mr. Horowitz for giving me the adventure any teen would love to have.
Just yesterday when I was a junior in high school that I picked up the first copy of the Alex Rider series. Now I’m 20 in college. I just love your works. You are one of the many water that got me writing today (not published yet. I want to so badly). I can’t believe that the series is endings. I still need to read #8 but #7 ch. 22 at the end made me mad and heartbroken for Alex (nice twist though). I can’t wait for the last book. I’m still nailing down who will die. If its the person I’m thinking of that would be crazy.
Ahh I’m so exited!!!!!! Ten minutes ago i didn’t know there were going to be any more alex rider books, because in crocodile tears it mentions his birthday, so i thought that was the end! I came across a page one google that there was going to be another book called “Yassen” and that led me here. i was 11 in high school when i picked up stormbreaker for the first time in my schools library im 16 now and the story is still as alive for me as it was 5 years back. the books are a work of genius. Now wheres that chapter?! (reading it is probably only going to make me become impatient for the book and become prolonged torture but i cant wait!) Good luck with the last chapters Anthony, thank you for all the wonderful books you written so far.

this ooks like a reallly dark book. i hope the rest of the “secrets” will be revealed in this book (like in Scorpia and Snakehead). i’m also wondering if the ending is a bigger twist than Snakehead.

I just started Snakehead not realising it was part of a series, could not put it down, but I tore myself away as i want to start at the beginning. I am in my forties and feel like I did when my English teacher introduced me to the 3 investigator series by Alfred Hitchcock when I was 10, totally excicted. Thank’s for being such a great writer.

Let me get one thing straight… I absolutely, positively “LOVE” (with a lot of exclamation marks) the Alex Rider series. They’re by far #1 on my fav books list.
I am so sad that Alex Rider will be rapped up. I can’t believe everything in this generation is going/gone. Alex Rider, Harry Potter, Shrek, Toy Story… all the favourites. So sad. When the next generation arrive, they will not know a good book until I show them Alex Rider. And I WILL make them read it. And they WILL like it.
I had found out about Alex Rider firstly, when “MI6″ was mentioned in my former spy series, “Max Remy Super Spy”, by Deborah Abela, and then my little brother got this DMAG magazine, and I flicked through it, and there was part of the Stormbreaker graphic novel in the comic strip bit. And then I decided to have a look at Alex Rider because Max Remy ended (at a tenth book), and what-do-you-know? I LOVED IT!
I understand that you can’t keep Alex Rider going forever (even if you did, one way or the other, you would at some point run out of ideas), but we – not just me- would really love it if the Alex Rider series ended at ten books. I don’t know why I’m going all weird over that but my friends say I have to be a perfectionist in some sort of way, and they’re right. You could possibly have one more adventure for my best book buddy? Even then, it would be more than great if now and then, you could write a few separate short stories for Alex, so that I doesn’t just die out…

My name is Elise and i have all your alex rider books. I love them soooooo much. I’d like to know why you are ending the alex rider series because all the boooks have been brill and because of it i brought the graphic novels which i has inspired me to do some of the pictures in them.
As a matter of fact i would like to say that your alex rider books have inspired me to write. I printed off my first copy of H+E which is about a Spy who has a Romeo and Juliet twist to it.
I would like to ask if any more of the graphic novels will be coming out such as eagle strike or Scorpia?
By the way why can’t you just tell us where the chapter is because i can’t even find the clues!!!!!

Anyway, I was just wondering if any of the other books were going to be made into movies like Stormbreaker was? I’ve seen it on multiple occasions, and although it doesn’t follow the book exactly, I still found it highly enjoyable =) You have also had me at a loss trying to find the first chapter of Scorpia Rising. I’ve spent hours searching, and I just can’t seem to find it. . . So hats off to you =D Haha

I have read your books since I was in fourth grade bought every single book . Gotta say this is the best thing I have ever read. I’m now a freshman in high school and one of those kids who doesn’t really like reading but you are my exception. Alex Rider OMG what a breathtaking fun filled epic series I’m absolutely in love with this series. And the power of five is just amazing visuals while I’m reading and can imagine everything you write about and it’s just a breathtaking experience. I would really love for you to continue the series about Alex, Sabin, Jack all of your amazing characters but that’s your decision so thanks for all the fun times I will continue to read your books over and over again.

i dont know what im going to do when you end it… after reading all of these comments maybe I’ll try the Power of Five… they should keep me busy until the last one comes out… but seriously, my friends will quite possibly freak out when i tell them that the series is ending, and APRIL 5TH!!! i hope your other books are as good as this series because i dont know what im going to do otherwise..

im almost scared to try to find the 1st chapter because id probably get so excited that would scream when i realized that i had to wait until april to read the rest,and plus, you said it yourself, someone is going to DIE!!! i think that if someone that has been in all of the other books dies, part of me will die with them =(

I can’t wait for Scorpia Rising, yet half of me wants to wait. It’s not the anticipation or the excitement, it’s not the curiousity that’s killing me either.
It feels like the longer I wait, the further the words ‘ninth and final’ are. I can’t believe it’s the last book already. But all the others are so damn good that I can’t let go of it. I hope we’ll find out what the secret Alex Rider project is. =)
well, hav u been listening to the other comments???? i loved alex rider, but now im losing interest and really want the next power of five to at least hav a title!! come on!! plz!! i really want it to come out! i would rather not ever read another alex rider if the po5 would come out! plz i already fogot most of the story, but im willing to reread the whole series if the next one comes out!! ;( would really appreciate hearing you at least started it, otherwise i dont think its ever going to happen. finish alex rider if you hav too, but ive bought all of the books and loved them, but i dont think im planning to read the last one till the po5 comes out.
I hope there are more Alex Rider Books. I’ve read Skeleton Key first, then I was hooked. The Alex Rider series are my faveorite series I’ve ever read. I’m starting the Gatekeepers series, though I love spy books more, but I hope it’s as intresting as the AR Books

as soon as I started reading the first book Stormbreaker I could not put it down, and it was the same for the rest of the books.
I knew they would have to end eventually just not so soon!

1. what do you mean by Smithers’s last gadget.. does he die?
2. Does Alan blunt have any kids?
3. Why did MRS. JONES children get taken away from her?

I LOVE the alex rider series. My brother brought stormbreaker from te libary and never read it. I read anything in sight so i started to read it and i just couldn’t put it down. The next day i went to my school libary and got the next one by the end of the week i read all 7 (crocodile tears wasn’t out) As soon as my teacher brought in crocodile tears i read it (at least 6 times) i was so sad coz i thought it had finished and then i find out your writing another one. You are a brilliant writer i recommended this book to a few of my friends and they can’t put them down. You have inspired me to become a writer. You are my fav writer along with J.R.R tolkien and J.K.Rowling.

I read the first stormbreaker and I loved it and I was the first one to read crocidile Tears in my school and it was great.
I LOVE alex rider, I just can’t get enough of it! The first book i read was Scorpia, and in the end when alex got shot, I got really sad til I found out he survived in Ark Angel (of course I felt like an idiot cos i had gone around telling everyone that alex was dead and it was over). I’m trying to write my own series of books but it’s not coming along very well, so I was wondering if you had any tips for me and all future writers? Thanks again for inspiring me and making my life infinitely better, and I hope you keep on writing!!!!
I think it’s totally awesome that you’re writting Scorpia Rising! I can’t get enough of the action packed novels of a British spy teen. I am really sad that Scopria Rising is the last book of the Alex Rider series, but all things must come to an end and I must congratulate Anthony Horowitz on this epic series with evil villains and plots.
This is one of the series of books that has gone under my best-series-ever-like-better-than-Artemis Fowl-series-thing! This is one of the few series that has inspired me to write about in many of my school reports and for fun. Thanks for writing this amazing series!

I’ve read through some of the comments and most seem to be along the same lines as mine – but I couldn’t resist adding a post too.
I love the Alex Rider books and was so excited to read this and see that there’s a new one out! Also I can’t wait for the last Power of Five book and I think that when it comes out I might just have to run to the nearest book shop as soon as possible! Sad that Scorpia rising is the last Alex Rider, but all good things have to come to an end and I’m glad that it sounds like the series ended on a high

But do you know what’s being eating me up? When, at the Lincoln book festival (made me happy to see it mentioned up there) that when you gave me a page from Scorpia Rising (prized posession!)and I later took the mic and thanked you for it, I fear I might have upset you by mentioning it ;o;
Becouse you said something along the lines of, ‘you’ll make everyone here want one now’ and then you had to explain to everyone what I was on about… so, I’m so if by some miracle you read this, so sorry about that! My brother said he felt embarrased for me. Which didnt help…
