A News blog for Anthony Horowitz

Alex Rider Author, Anthony Horowitz to write new Sherlock Holmes novel

When Alex embarks on his final mission in Scorpia Rising, Anthony won’t be putting his feet up and taking it easy. Read about what his next major project is, right here.

Anthony Horowitz, the BAFTA-award winning creator of Foyle’s War and author of the bestselling Alex Rider children’s series, has been chosen by the Conan Doyle Estate to write a new full length Sherlock Holmes novel which will be published by Orion in September 2011. The content of the new tale – and indeed the title – remain a closely guarded secret. The prologue is currently under lock and key at the Orion offices. The announcement of the new novel was made to the Sherlock Holmes Society on 15 January where Anthony Horowitz was the keynote speaker.

This brand new story is being written with the full endorsement of the Conan Doyle Estate; the first such time that they have given their seal of approval for a new Sherlock Holmes novel. Setting aside the numerous film and TV adaptations of the famous Baker Street detective, Anthony Horowitz has returned to the original books to produce a brilliant mystery novel, stripped back to the original style of Conan Doyle.

Anthony Horowitz says: “I fell in love with the Sherlock Holmes stories when I was sixteen and I’ve read them many times since. I simply couldn’t resist this opportunity to write a brand new adventure for this iconic figure and my aim is to produce a first rate mystery for a modern audience while remaining absolutely true to the spirit of the original”

Anthony Horowitz is a TV screen-writer and is the creator and writer of ‘Foyle’s War’, ‘Midsomer Murders’ and ‘Collison’, as well as adapting many of Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot novels for the ITV series. He was awarded a BAFTA for ‘Foyle’s War’ and Foyle was recently voted ‘The People’s Detective’ in the ITV3 Crime Thriller Awards, an award voted for by viewers. His new five-part drama series ‘Injustice’ will be shown on ITV1 in May. Anthony Horowitz is also the author of a string of bestselling children’s books, including the Alex Rider, The Power of Five and The Diamond Brother series. The ninth and final Alex Rider book, Scorpia Rising, is published on 31 March.

When are you going to write the next and last Power of Five book, I need to know:)

  2. Emm January 17th, 2011 8:17 pm

Congratulations Anthony! This is excellent news and quite a coup! Of course, I imagine this means we’ll have to wait that much longer for the final Power of Five book?

  3. Trudi January 18th, 2011 10:41 pm

I’m really looking forward to the publication of this brand new Holmes adventure. I run a Sherlock fan site and if you plan to do any book signings relating to this project do please let us know. We’ll happily publish the details on the site.

  5. Natasa January 19th, 2011 11:11 pm

Congratulations! I can’t wait until this latest publication comes out. I’m sure it’s going to be as kickass as all the rest of Anthony Horowitz’s books!

I’m all for new projects, especially when I know what a wonderful job you would do with Sherlock but please look after your present loyal readers by completing the final installment of The Power of Five.

As a Sherlock Holmes fan this interests me a great deal; however, this is not the first story since Doyle to contain Sherlock Holmes. At last count there are approximately 600 pastiches, or novels imitating Doyle’s work, involving Sherlock Holmes as a main character and written over the last 7 decades.

I wish Mr. Horowitz all the best and hope to read his version of Sherlock Holmes when the book is released.

if i may politely ask, where is the news on scorpia rising? it comes out in about two months, which isn’t that long of time. but i guess you could be wanting to keep it secret, should there be a huge twist (or twists) in the book

  13. Hümeyra January 29th, 2011 11:50 am

Congratulations! I can not wait until this latest publication comes out. But I think that we have to wait until the power of five.

i started and finished the released gatkeepers several years ago, and the only thing that kept me sane when i finished was the thought that “hey, it’ll be out next year for sure!” and, what do you know, it’s not. i’ve never been a fan of sherlock holmes, and i think it’s great that Mr. horowitz is getting the chance to write a novel on him, but i would be MUCH more excited over the most postponed release or even mention of the next gatekeeper installment…

  16. peter January 30th, 2011 11:29 am

when will you publish scorpia rising?

Sherlock Holmes? Terrific! The estate couldn’t have picked a better author to take on the job! As an avid fan of Sherlock Holmes, I look forward to reading the novel, and will be sure to pick it up off the shelves once it’s out.

When is the last Power of Five book coming out?

  21. Shadowsnake451 February 5th, 2011 4:38 pm

Yay! A new Sherly novel! And you’re right- Mr. Horowitz, I trust you completely. I know you will not muck this up. I couldn’t think of anyone I’d rather have writing this.

  22. Frustrated Fred February 9th, 2011 4:49 pm

Congratulations on yet another new project, but how about finishing one you have already. THE POWER OF FIVE !!!!
In October 2009 you said you were doing research for “your next book”.
How long does it take?? and haven’t you published other books between then and now?
Play fair and at least tell us when you might get round to it rather than starting new projects.

  23. […] Anthony Horowtiz – author of the famous Alex Rider series, and Power of Five novels, has been enlisted, for the first time in history, by the Conan Doyle Estate to write a new Sherlock Holmes novel. Mr. Horowitz has stated that he will stay true to the writings of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, yet intends to place Sherlock Holmes in a new environment – the 21st Century. Look for it this September in a book store near you! [1] […]

September! Oh goodie, it won’t be years away.
Mr. Horowitz please would it be possible for you to come into Manchester to promote any of your new books? You did a few yearsago but I had a dentist appointment, and then I was in school. It would make all the fans in this city so happy if we could meet you! So, pretty please consider it.

  25. Pagee February 12th, 2011 11:15 pm

I am a great fan of Sherlock Holmes and am very much looking forward to reading this new variation of Conan Doyal’s brilliant creation. I am also very exited about the final Power Of Five book and cannot wait to find out what happens next in this Spectacularly thrilling series. its been to long since the publication of Necropolis. So it would be excellent to here news of it

  26. Francis Wyatt February 13th, 2011 4:58 pm

I agree with comments about when is the last Power of Five book going to hit the shelves?
I like the idea of a new Sherlock Holmes novel, I enjoyed the originals, especially The Specled Band, and I’m sure Anthony will get the style spot on.
However, it was Alex Rider that started me on these books and I’m sure that the end of Crocodile Tears, we were promised TWO more books. Everyone has the right to change their mind, and maybe Anthony is fed up with Alex, but I’ll feel a little deprived if there really is only one book left. My bookshelf will look odd!

    Great stories, though.

  27. conor February 14th, 2011 8:05 pm

your idea about alex going to a school in cairo and your idea of the life of Yassen sounds amazing i hope you do publish theese books soon

    beat that DAHL

  28. shadowsnake451 March 5th, 2011 4:31 pm

Oh yeah! I can’t wait for the Yassen book. And who’s going to die in the last book. I’ve narrowed it down to Jack, Jones, Blunt, Smithers, or- piossibly, but unlikely-Alex. It has to besomeone who has been in all the books… Aah! Anyone else screaming for early releases of Mr. Horowitz’s new books?

  29. Marcus March 6th, 2011 8:42 pm

Mr.Horowitz wow… when I finished reading your Alex Rider adventures I jumped right into Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes series and I can honestly say I couldn’t imagine a more fit author to tell the tales of the Greatest Detective. I hope you will bring the mystery, romance, and cleverness that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle displayed so well in the series and bring it back to life.

just was reading power of 5 series and wanted to ask when is the last book of the power of five coming out.

plz do reply i have to know what happens to the 5 of them :]

  32. callum March 11th, 2011 7:54 pm

when does the last power of five book come out? will there be 2 or 1 more alex rider books? when does the next diamond brothers adventure come out – the radius of the lost shark? you mentioned smithers having a secret – any hints as to what it is? also, what is the last power of five book called? please just answer at least ONE of these questions you’re my favourite author, you’re the only author who i have all the books of, and it was your books that got me into reading, if a book has you’re name on it, i buy it.believe me, i’ve read the best books, but you’re my favourite out of all of them so it would be great to hear from you

  33. Luke Gauvin Grennan March 22nd, 2011 6:15 pm

    Dear Mr. Horowitz,

My name is Luke and I am a big fan of your books. I have read Alex Rider STORMBREAKER and it was amazing!

I am writing to you about POINT BLANC as I found it one of the best books you wrote and if you were considering making POINT BLANC a movie I think I am the person you need. I speak French fluently, am very fit and I am a good actor. I also ski and snowboard extremely well and I am very good at martial arts and gymnastics. I feel I would make an excellent Alex Rider due to my appearance.

I would be delighted to hear from you if you think the movie is a possibility and to know if you are writing any more Alex Rider books.

  34. abdul March 26th, 2011 9:26 am

4I hope alex rider books neva stop i luv it, cant wait for scorpia rising

  35. Jacob March 28th, 2011 5:11 pm

Luke, if you think Point Blanc is good, you should read Snakehead. Also, although I’m not a Sherlock Holmes fan (I’m more of the Hercule Poirot type) I bet the book will be great.

  36. abe March 30th, 2011 9:21 pm

    Dear Mr. Horowitz,

Long fan of yours from the Alex Rider series.
However, I have to say I am a little nervous about you writing a new Sherlock Holmes book.

I find when people write sequel books to books from more than a hundred years turns out badley.

And considering the plot is a “closely guarded secret”…I really hope that doesnt mean your going to kill Watson.

well I’ll still read it when it comes out

regards and thank you for a great series.

  37. Ethan March 31st, 2011 2:57 am

  39. Chris Watson April 7th, 2011 8:33 pm

    Hey Anthony.
I am a huge fan and I can’t wait for the book mentioned here (“Yassen”.) I am a big fan of all of your books, however think Scorpia Rising is in a completely liege to the rest. However, I would also like to know when the next “Power Of Five” book will be out. You left “Necropolis” on a huge cliff hanger and I am practicably dieing to find out what happens to Matt, Pedro and the others.
    From your HUGEST fan,
    Chris. 😀

Mr. Horowitz, Pleeeeeaaaaaassssseeeeeee will you write the last book of ‘The Power of Five.’ It’s been far too long and every time I see that a new book has been released by Anthony Horowitz, I get über excited and then I see that it’s NOT the book I’ve been waiting for and it’s really disappointing. I understand that you want your fans to feel the anticipation and all that good stuff, but seriously??? I really enjoyed the first four books and I’m one of those people that is cursed with a terrible memory, so I’ll have to re-read the first four books so I remember what happened. It would be really cool of you to maybe, possibly give out the release date of the next ‘Power of Five’ book. Thanks :)

Oh, and congrats on your new ‘Sherlock Holmes’ book 😛

    From Lekha 😀
