Actually, most of the theories in the book are actually theories dating back to the conquistadors. Believe me, I had to trawl through enough of the spanish sources for my coursework...
The theory about a warning to aliens is actually a common one; as is the idea of it being a guide for alien visitors... Trust me, the Spanish conquistadors had the theory that it was to do with a supernatural being before AH did.. smiley

Even the 'Old Ones' escaping relates to the theory that it was to do with Hell.
