Having literally just finished Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett I feel I must recommend it. Mostly because I cannot believe that I haven't read this book before. Because It was awesome. In fact, you should all go and buy a copy because I really can't tell you what's in it without ruining some part of it.

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss is a good read, and it has a sequel out that I haven't read yet, though I'm not sure if younger readers would enjoy it or not.

The first time I read Lord of the Rings I didn't really like it all that much (at 13).  When I read it again at 17 I thought it was the best thing ever (or one of them), so sometimes that apparently does matter!

Might go over a few younger readers heads on occasion. The Wise Man's Fear is the sequel though. Great book. You should get on that.

Didn't like Name of the Wind. But I really should re-read LOTR. I too, read it as a 12 - 13 year old, and though I finished it, had trouble getting through it. Though I still love the Hobbit. Which I must re-read before the film.

Hmm, agreed. I've been wanting to give LoTR another go for ages.

Oooh, recently finished the Percy Jackson series. Now I'd never read them properly because for some reason the first one annoyed me, but now that I've done with them I do think they're quite good. I generally love mythology-related books (although, I'm reading American Gods by Neil Gaiman right now and it has significantly less mythology than I would have liked) but Percy Jackson's great, especially for younger readers. I might give Heroes of Olympus a go later, too.

Heroes of Olympus is meant to be rubbish, though I haven't read it.

D: Nooo. Heroes is great! See.. I didn't like number one so much (because though I like Jason, he's not really all that exciting) but Son of Neptune is brilliant!

Wrong! They are just not quite as good as the original series and the 1st one is not that great. Still awesome though!

Sounds like I'll have to give it a go!

Perhaps those who said it was rubbish were just haters haha.

If you are into teen fantasy, then the skulduggery pleasant series is a definite consideration. Derek Landy (author of skulduggery pleasant series), will keep you well entertained, and as the books progress, the story line increases in brilliance. To me, it was one of the best books I've ever read, but then again, you could be one of those characters whose not into fantasy, and then the book will seem to drag on endlessly. But I suppose people have different opinions.

Oh, and of course, the series is still incomplete. The seventh book is guaranteed to be a best-seller, as the rest of the series are, and is released September 2012.

Thanks for reading this. Hope I helped.  I hardly ever use smilies, but just this once  grin.

^Bonus points for a good, well thought out post.

But I've never been interested in reading Skulduggery and I think the ship has sort of sailed for me.

Though it's not exactly a recommendation (but I do think everyone should read The Black Prism), am totally excited about The Blinding Knife by Brent Weeks coming out in a couple of weeks.

Ooh, what's it about?

I second the Skulduggery recommendation. The first book is a bit weak but it's really one of those series that just gets progressively better, I absolutely love it. Skulduggery is as if Anthony Horowitz and Eoin Colfer had a baby book together. It's just very funny and very dark in the later books, quite wonderful. Kingdom of the Wicked (the latest installment) was great as well.

From the website -

"Gavin Guile is the Prism, the most powerful man in the world. He is high priest and emperor, a man whose power, wit, and charm are all that preserves a tenuous peace. But Prisms never last, and Guile knows exactly how long he has left to live: Five years to achieve five impossible goals."

It's really really good. So's his Night Angel trilogy. I must re-read it.

I would deffinately recommend Water for Elephants. It was an amazing book, one of those that you seem to read to fast but you can't slow down because its that good.It took a while for me to find time to read this book and it was worth it!
