Totally rigged debate last night... We lost - according to the moronic adjudicator, who claimed to be confused by our detention of child - 'a refugee or asylum seeker under the age of 18' (topic was That children should be kept in detention centres)! She then said the reason we lost was because she got confused by our case wtf?? No-one else was! We were affirmative - our team line was 'In Australia, detention centres are necessary,. Removing children from these centres gives rise to more problems than solutions." Theirs was "Don't lock them away, let them play"

And then she said that they won because of refutation - I as 3rd speaker refuted for almost 5 mins, with a summary of under a minute - their third speaker summarised for 30 seconds, then spent 4 mins repeating what the other speakers had said, even that she was mumbling! AND their whole 'easy to follow case' was a complete contradiction - they said that instead of putting kids in detention centres with their families, new 'facilities' could be built in the middle of the desert for them to stay while processed - sound familiar anyone? These 'facilities' are nothing but shiny detention centres, where the kids have the added trauma of a) Being in the desert and b) Being separated from family - hardly playing We said that while there are definitely problems with the current detention centre setup, they are a necessity, and we suggested that with a few changes to the system, it would be easier to let the children stay with their family as the process was sped up.
They also talked about the limited education in detention centres - these detention centres aren't SCHOOLS, they're processing facilities - what's to stop them from going to school after they've been processed and properly established?!!!Urrrghhhh

I could go on for a couple more pages, but I have a feeling you'd all get bored with my ranting. Fact is, I don't really want to re-live last night. We're out of the competition, thanks to that loss  undecided

shocked You're a third speaker too! YAY! Third speaker buddies! Do you have points of information yet?

It was a dangerous move though - your argument. If the other team had known what to do (sounds like they were clueless) then they would have just attacked your whole 'detention centres are the best option'. I lost my last impromptu debate on that (we were actually arguing that there were better solutions - Our idiotic first speaker kinda forgot to mention the second half of our model...the bit that let it make economical sense...ARRRRGGG!!! I wrote his whole damn speech for him and he couldn't even read off his palm card!)

Adjudicators can be funny sometimes. We had one judge in Mock Trials make us loose even though we had obviously won. We reckon he was an ex-student from our arch rival school...

Yep! grin *hi-fives* What do you mean points of info?

Yeah well what we were saying was that the concept of detention centres - i.e. having a holding place for asylum seekers is not them problem, it's just the living conditions and the fact that the process is so drawn out. We said that if these were to be improved, removing children would create more problems, such as added trauma of separation, and the fact that safe, secure temporary homes would need to be found for the kids, than solutions such as short-term comfort.

Ohh I hate it when that happens - I used to be a first speaker, but I migrated to third, and often I have to help our first speakers write their speeches - especially in a potentially definitional debate, or else they stuff up the whole thing...

Mmm the annoying thing is that this was a round we couldn't afford to lose  undecided

Hey guys, I just got back from hospital, all post-op and with my knee in a brace. They had to go in and reattach my cartilage since I'd actually managed to tear it half off.

Anyway, surgery went well, and I am now pretty much bedridden for the next two weeks.

No, he didn't. Kind of sad about that...

Anyway, painkillers are my best friend right now. Painkillers and chocolate.
