My favorite "classic" book is, by far, The Count of Monte Cristo

Oh isn't that what 'Revenge' is based on? I literally just finished watching the first episode cheesy

The tough bit of War and Peace is the effort the reader must put in. Why do some people have several names!!!

It might be a cool idea where we set up a reading group sort of thing where we choose a book, and read it fifty pages at a time and discuss? We could each propose a book every month or so and every week after we finish reading our fifty pages get together and talk about it? This might make it easier to read books such as War and Peace. But it might be hard for everyone to get the book we want to read.... Anyway, just an idea hahaa.

If we did War and Peace then it would take us YEARS.

Also, my reading is only in school holidays...

Sometimes our holidays collide don't they? And I usually read all year round so we could make it so that everyone can take part...

I will be honest, classics aren't really my type of book. Despite this, I have read a few. I know this sounds appalling, but, Ive never read any Dickens, so perhaps you can say that i can't judge classics yet. I do want to try Dickens, to try and open my eyes to classics, but there are scarcely any of his books around today.

The one classic that has made me frantically search my bookshelf for more, is Treasure Island. At the beginning, it may seem like a bit of a rambling story, but you will soon grasp the storyline and be enthralled by the work of a pure writing genius. I picked it up at the age of nine, and then it seemed tedious and boring after the first couple of pages, so I slammed it shut and let the dust gather on it. Only recently being only eleven, did i begin to read it again. It was one of the best decisions (book-wise), that i ever made.

OK, so you're probably bored now, and I congratulate you if you actually read all of my rambling paragraph above. Hope I helped!

Heya bookwork64 Smiley
Sorry the board's been a bit dead 'hibernating' for the past month or so (don't worry it picks up after a while).
However i am momentarily back  grin

Yes, Dickens can be quite hard to get into at the beginning - I know that I often found it hard to get stuck into them at first. I think it is because the words he uses and the writing style is so vastly different from what we're normally used to, it takes a little while to get into the swing of it. Even after saying that though, I find what helps me get into his books with a bit more understanding and enthusiasm is if I have watched the movie/series first. I know it sounds a bit wierd, especially to those who believe the book is always better than the movie, but watching it first doesn't mean you can't enjoy the book just as much after. In fact, as I said before, for me personally, I actually enjoy the books more after I've seen the movie/series. So that's just a suggestion if you're interested into getting into Dickens.

Treasure Island, I agree is a great book - I think I mentioned it earlier in this topic... But yeah - hope my advice helps  cheesy

Ah, I agree with Tiggz about the film thing. That gets you a lot more excited because you know what is coming up in the books.

I used to find classic tales really difficult to understand even though i read a lot of historical biography type books from people like Gandhi and i love poetry preferably persian/arab/urdu based types as they have more depth but reading actual stories gets me all ........blank? And to top off my problems i am doing Literature AS and we are reading a gothic classic: Frankenstein(!)
After reading it over 4 times and finding great synopses from the internet i feel like i've already aced the exam that is yet to come. I think its because the tale is something i totally did not expect to be as it was that it turned me into a classic obsessive. I now find these sort of stories really interesting and am now testing my classic literature analysis by reading other classics such as the Odyssey and pretty soon Anna Karenina. Apparently there's a movie out on that too. And the Great Gatsby movie is out too.....i dont like that one undecided
