Green smoke is always interesting, but that might give the impression they've been abducted by aliens xD

Haha Cheesy Man, I'm pretty hungry. There's only chocolate and biscuits in the house and I'm off them for a month :/

My sister's stuck on a question and my brain isn't working so could you guys help?

17-16x=3-2x what is the value of x? And could you show how you did it too?

17-16x = 3-2x

put the Xs on one side

2x-16x = 3-17
-14x = -14 (divide by -14)
x = 1

...AND I MADE A SOLEMN PROMISE TO FOREGO ANY KIND OF MATH ON VACATION, SO FEEL SPECIAL.

There's never anything nice to eat for a snack at my house. I also tend to only have two meals a day, but that's just me.

As to your maths question, that's easy.

17 -16x = 3 -2x       You want the x only on one side of the equation, so add 16x to both sides to cancel out.
17 = 3 +14x            Now you want to get rid of the 3, so take away 3 from both sides.
14 = 14x                 Next step is losing x's co-efficiant, so divide both sides by 14.
1 = x

Simple.

EDIT: DAMN YOU BINGO YOU ANSWERED WHILE I WAS TYPING! Well, I'm not going to waste my working out, so have my version too.

And THAT, ladies and gentleman, is why I left public school.

I will never need to know that in my life and would rather not waste my time learning it.

Of course, I'm not saying there aren't uses for it but me personally, no.

...that's like... remedial maths... I mean, I think I learned how to do that in 8th grade. When did you leave school?!

I'm not saying it's useful. God knows I hate it. But I think people should know it, at the very least on the occasion that someone on some random forum asks you to solve a question Tongue

SF - well done :') Your explanation was really much better.

Wow, never thought I'd see the day when we'll be solving maths problems in the Attic! Sure gives a nice change to throwing pies at each other

Left in Grade 10 when we started having to do pointless (in my opinion) subjects. Home schooled instead if you consider teaching myself homeschooled. In any case I'm done school now but the final test thing only had English (Reading and Writing, no Shakespeare or poetry crap) Science (Earth Science, Biology, and Physics, no useless chemistry) Social Studies (only Canadian History or things involving the country) and Math was Basics like fractions and stuff up to geometry but no dumb algebra.

The Internet was my best friend. I contribute almost nothing to my teachers, I taught myself almost all i know mostly rather from my study book or the internet.

I know what I want to do, always have and I was just, floored at having to do all this useless stuff I will never use during my career.

Thanks. We did pages of this stuff in year 8 and 9. I actually really like doing it. I haven't done any algebra in ages though, so it took me a minute to remember how. XD

. . . .

*throws cream pie at SD's face*

Well I haven't done any maths for the last 9 months and i've never been happier. . .  Not even why biology required it. I just haven't. I hadn't realised that until now. .  It makes me so happy.

They really are quite useless, Interesting though.

Going back tot he smoke thing, I agree that Green smoke is always disease. Or in a Modern Warfare game a sign that you have taken back the White House from the invading Russians and therefore should not be bombed. . . Yellow smoke is equally sickly. . .

Persimmon smoke though. . . now that would be something.
