I think what happend was that when Jamie was shot in his time Sapling was injured in someway too but Sapling must have died ! so Jamie took Saplings place although he was still unconscious or dieing ! but Jamie's body must have died in his time whilst his mind was in the past ! so when his mind came back it came back to a dead body but the old lady summoned a spirit that came as an eagle and resuscitated him !  (complicated, I know)

i would not say that Jamie's body died. Because then it might start to decay (they were outside!). I think it was more of a pause. Jamie was on pause while his soul went to the past, when he came back, the play button was hit. Like in a movie when you press the pause button, go to the toilet, come back and press play, with nothing happening to anything in the movie...sort of...do you know what I am saying???
