about black holes... i've always wondered where they go, because holes usually go somewhere. So what would happen if the earth did get sucked into a black hole?Huh  I mean, if things get sucked into it its not really nothings is it? the stuff would be in it.

Are black holes stars that have collapsed on themselves? i think i heard it on doctor who.

dj, that picture is really cool, do you know when it was taken?

i think you are thinking of a worm hole, a thing like a black hole but it can travel through time and space. black holes are colapsed stars, i thought all the things that go int them get compressed into almost nothingness, but i stand to be corrected.

Apparently if the newborn star is bigger than the sun, it will shine for a shorter time than a normal star (which is about 10,000 million years) then gets bigger then bigger until it becomes a supergiant then it soons blast itself apart in a gigantic explosian called a supernova.  What is left of it will either collapse into a tiny, dense neutron star or will carry on collapsing until it becomes a black hole.

OMG...Meggy. Is. Adoring. This. Topic. I get soo carried away when on the subject of space. Tongue

Alleykitty: Yes, thats true. (I think supernova's are fascinating) Loosely speaking though, a black hole is a region of space that has so much mass concentrated in it that there is no way for a nearby object to escape its gravitational pull.
The term comesd from the fact that the absorption of visible light renders the hole's middle, shall I say, invisible from the black space around it.
Despite its 'middle' being invisible, a black hole may reveal its presence through an interaction with matter that lies in orbit outside its event horizon. For example, a black hole may be perceived by tracking the movement of a group of stars that orbit its center. Alternatively, one may observe gas (from a nearby star, for instance) that has been drawn into the black hole. The gas spirals inward, heating up to very high temperatures and emitting large amounts of radiation that can be detected from earthbound and earth-orbiting telescopes. Such observations have resulted in scientists becoming aware of black holes.

Does that answer some quesitons are am I rambling yet again.

Oh that makes sense. And it answeerd my question about how astronomers (and whoever else that is wondering about astronomy) know there is blackholes without going close enough to see it and get sucked in.

on the subject of worm holes: they have not been proven to exist, tis just a theory.

well now that we have finished talking about holes i would like to bring up the subject of aliens, do they exist?

I think they do......but not within a few thousand light years of us

Aliens??? Wow that would be if they flew down to earth or something and spoke English...though not cool if they come to warn us that they are gonna start an invasion on us 'earthlings'. tongue Maybe if they did come we could like make a treaty or something...and they tell us more about the universe (and planet x and other planets and constellations in other galaxies...and whether there are other universes)At the rate our astronomers are going, I don't think we would come to a conclusion about the wormholes and other stuff in years (or centuries)

As pedro said, wormholes travel through time and space...blackholes I think just sucks you up to pure nothingness.

Are wormholes not a figment of ones imagantion? Made up entirely for the soul purpose of making a 1980's sci-fi a little bit more interesting? Tongue I'm not sure though.

Anyway, Aliens.
(This takes me back to year 9, I had to do a stupid report on life in outter space...twas fun, yet boring)
I had to find a bunch of facts for and against and, of course I found little or know pointers for.
I mean, they say that billiosn of years ago there may have been life on Mars due to the fact that there is evidence to suggest that water may well have been there, however they are not sure.
Not that their sure on anything.
I mean the only planets that scientists know an awful lot about are the 8 (previously 9) of this solar system.
They can't say for certaint ehres no life in space cause they don't know.
Think about it, billions upon billions of Galaxies, stars, solar systems, suns, moons...you can't say theres not life somewhere
Earth is merely a pinacle in the grand scheme of creation. (OMG...I've always wanted to say that!!)
I would sooo, love to know if theres life in space.
I mean what would they be?
Cute little bunny rabbits desperate to make peace?
Huge, dragon like monsters ready to murder anyone who crossed their path?
Or perhaps, as shown in your average sci-fi movie. A green scally creature with knowledge way beyond that of a human being.
Or maybe, even, a human being.
That'd be awsome.
Sorry..I think I've gone on long enough now.

'tis just such a fascinating subject. ^^

yeah but they are modern sci fi now lol
How do they know that whatever may of lived on mars actually needed water??? If they are aliens chances are that they dont need the same things to survive i.e water.
