Why does it even matter anyway? I mean we could spend our lives wondering what Alex is short for - Alexander or Alessandro, but we wouldn't get anywhere! Anyway, as I said,

It could be anything! Jackie, Jacqueline, or maybe just Jack. It doesn't say in any of the books and I'm guessing we'll never find out!

It doesn't necessarily say that it was short for something, only that Alex didn't know what it was short for.
