I certainly don't disagree!

there are books out there, but most of the mainstream books have male characters - by mainstream i mean popular books for boys and girls.

although I can say that tomorrow when the war began (aussie books, many people don't like it, I do) are very popular books with a female protagonist!

I find the opposite for myself. In the books I love the most (bar a rare few), there is a female protagonist- The Obernewtyn Chronicles, Mortal Instruments, Sookie Stackhouse and most recent, The Black Jewels novels. =D

Oooh Mortal Instruments is good. xD

...But with female protagonists, there's always more about love than with male.. I think..

I hate books that are trying to tell a decent story but get love muddled up in it (romances do not get love muddled up in them, the story is the love...I hate it when a story gets muddled up in the love) and that happens with ALOT in books with female protagonists. In some cases the romance is necisary, others where it is most certainly NOT.

I am not trying to insult books with female protagonists...there are good ones out there...but no much

Dilan: but are the books you read aimed at an audience of young women? or are they aimed at both boys and girls?

Oooh, that didn't really happen in Wind on Fire.. there was a bit of love but most was unrequited and wasn't the major main part..

Lol Pedro, I dont think you're insulting those books - the people who like to read them (ie. teenage girls) usually really like that kind of subplot wink

There's a thread for Mortal Instruments now people, so go gush about Jace cheesy

Honestly though, these days I seem to be drowning in books that are written in first person, from the POV of a teenage girl, who's starring opposite a teenage boy. Which means yes, they have a female protagonist, but it kind of defeats the point because you read it for the (infinitely cooler) male character... just from the POV of the girl.

(Um, the books Im thinking of - Mortal Instruments (Jace!), Vampire Academy (DIMITRI!), Evernight (Lucas), House of Night (....all her various weird relations), Twilight (of course)...)

Okay, ALL those books have vampires in them. Only MI isnt ABOUT vampires.

WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THE WORLD OF TEENAGE FICTION?!?!?!?

Hrrmm. Hard question. I've always enjoyed 'dudes' books more, but I think with some of them, (Sookie, mortal instruments) it may be more for girls. Black Jewels and Obernewtyn are definitely boy-readable books though. Though that may have something to do with the fact that they can be violent, have strong male characters and are pretty well written; to the point you enjoy reading it because they're just told in such a way you just want to know what happens.

And fair enough about the love thing, though I guess it depends on who reads it? Sometimes it annoys me if there's /too/ much love interference, but I like a bit of it. Maybe I'm just a romantic at heart hahah.

If you like vamps, you may be interested in reading Sookie Stackhouse novels (by Charlaine Harris). They have a show based on the books; True Blood. It's not /as/ 18+ as the show suggests.

Oh it's never been very good... Everything's just a rip off of something else. There's stuff like AH, Harry Potter, Tabitha Suzuma (ok, adult writer but..) Jonathan Stroud-

OOOOOOOOOH!! Jonathan Stroud, in Bartimaeus Trilogy, has a female main character and there is no love! And even in her perspective!

It's  true, there's hardly any good fiction anymore - well, there is but it's overshadowed by the billions of vampire books coming out. But on the subject of vampires, the Vampirates is an okay series too - and because it features twins (Connor and Grace) with equal parts i suppose i can say the protagonists are even. Although Connor has far less romance and is way cooler, him being a pirate and her being a vampire-lover. But whatever, i found something! ^^

I gotta say, the best book i've read so far with a decent female main character is Skulduggery. Valkyrie is just awesome. But i think males are just easier to write about - girls can be so annoying as main characters.

Oh, I LOVE Skulduggery!!! Val is fantastic, you're so right. And I whole-heartedly agree about girl characters!!! - when I was voting for the Ficys, I had such a hard time choosing 'Best Characteress in a Leading Role', because I didnt really like any of them a LOT. You dont really love the girl characters (- you mostly just want to sort of BE them...) And somehow girls are so useless wth angst, too... If you try to make female character angsty she sort of just comes off annoying. But boys do it so well wink

And I was more making the comment that the world of teen fiction is being Taken Over by vampires. Or vampirates, or vampyres, or whatever you want to call them. Not to mention the Vampire HUNTERS, of course. It's faintly alarming.

I know!!! I havent found a decent book WITHOUT Vampires in Egypt in a long time... Yeesh.

Btw, I agree with you on the angstless girl thing. They also come off as being overly dramatic and spoilt...
