Why are there so many male protagonists in all cool books?

There are acctually alot of books like that.
in The sword of truth series. the lead has a powerful wife and his elite bodygaurds are all women.

yes. alot of old books have that..but not any of the 'cool' new ones (altho alot of the other ones are cool! )

but the most popular have eiter boy leads or boys doing the cool stuff.

I'm always impressed when people think that repeating the same sentence will get more attention... also taboo language (guessing it's taboo rather than  a vulgarism going by the fact the user is now banned?)... it's not funny or clever...  shows the way the language is going *mutters* (sorry, i get distracted by stuff like that... i don't think that any language should be treated in that way).

Call me a traitor to women, but Im not overly bothered by the fact most books I read have male leads. I know that I know females who could match them... and im content to accept that if the book's good enough. It's just when the female lead is pathetic I can't stand it.

i totally agree with chogirl! I want to see a girl/spy main character soon-and if the girl cant be a spy then maybe somethin else thats cool. GIRLS WILL TAKE OVER!!!! Im like a obsessed reader but most of the books I read hav a male main character, but I do hav 2 series which a girl is the main character and that The Twilight Series and The Maximum Ride Series both series are extremely good, sooooo if you want a girl main characther you should read those books!! GIRLS ROCK!!!!

Dude, I've known this since I was 11... which gave me my book idea! Also that there are never any bad guys for main characters... (by 'guys', i don't mean males, i mean people in general)

I remember thinking about it once (probably the only time...) and realised that yeah, most great prtagonists are male, and also, a whole lot of them are written by women... lol.

I'm a girl (yeah yeah obvious, Im making a point here) and I have five or six plotted novels rolling around in my head and all of them have young (16-20 y/o) males as the main character. I have no idea why, and it's weird. But *shrug* it just is...

Another AWESOME series with a female main character is Skulduggery Pleasant. (Yay Valkyrie!) Is there a thread for that series here? *goes to look...*

i knoe a couple of books with both male and female audiences. like terry pratchet's books on tiffany, a true witch, who discovers that witchcraft isnt about magic at all.. itz about the balance of truth, tales, and how other people think of you and wat u want them to think. its confusing , i know and i personally dont fully understand it all but its very interesting...but for guys out there...DO NOT READ THE LAST BOOK ( Wintersmith) its......about.....never mind....

I also read the book theif. the begining is confusing because all sorts of things happen at once...and its from Death's veiw and there's colors and....it gets better at the end...

so bacically terry prachet sort of makes a charectar that's a girl, but very tomboyish so both sexes will like it but in the book theif...there's both a girl and a guy....

there's also millicent min series by lisa yee. the first and the third book is aimed @ girls...but the second book is all bout guys. i laughed soooooo hard when i realized all the things that were going on in a guys's head.

So bacically itz all bout what the author thinks readers want..

the book thief, though, is narrated by Death who is following Liesl...and I think most cultures depict Death as being male, so automatically it has a male narrator, which gives way to thge male protagonist 

to be honest,  I've never really been bothered that authors rarely have amazing female protagonists...obviously females are so awesome they can't be confined to the page  Im kidding guys...guys are just as awesome

I am answering the topic question here:
because back in the old days when everyone was sexist males did everything and they were the hero's...and so imidiately when you think of 'hero' you think of a robin hood type figure...or at least authors writing books do.

the problem also (in my opinion) is that most books with female protagonists are written for girls. there are lots of books out there written for both boys and girls - and MOST of them have male protagonists.

When somebody writes a decent book for both male and female readers with a female protagonists, I will read it!

Yeah, I read a book that was fantasy with a female protagonist, and I thought it was pretty good for both genders, until it went on bout her first period... Now, I don't really know what males as a general like in their books, but I'm pretty sure they don't enjoy reading about the first period... Feel free to disagree though xD

the percy jackson books are good because in the last olympian, anabeth plays a main role. i thought of another series yesterday, but i forgot...i'll get back to you guys on that
