I think the main reason to have Richard in there is so that matt can travel around.  A 14 year old kid would not be able to travel the world on his own the way Matt does. 

The gatekeepers can use the gateways.

richard is a very strange character if you ask me i think he has a big role to play and mite in some way be conected to the 5 and the old ones and as for the sacrificiale knife i think that has to come in somewhere but basicly iam clue less

It is my guess but I think Richard might kill Matt with the knife on Matt's insistence. Jamie may also play a role in this. I am not sure about it, it is, afterall, just a theory.

I had a dream about him using it to add it to something else, like a box, and then he turned it, kind of like a handle, and he opened it and all this bad stuff, like other Old Ones, come out. But that was just a dream.

I think though that he will just use it in the last battle with the Old Ones and kill a lot people.

I actually believe that the fact the knife can't be seen or found is very important..I just don't know what it's significance is...
I don't really think that Richard will kill Matt, but if he does i dont think it would be in a situation where Jamie or Matt insisted on it because
1. The knife  isn't the only way of killing the five, why don't they just send matt in to be killed by the old ones, at least that way he can take a few down with him...
2. AH has said himself he doesn't like killing off main charcters, and I think he would have grown atatched to matt... but then again..

If Matt dies the past matt will replace him.

I just had this brainwave that there might not be any sacrifice this time because the old ones already know about that trick. What can happen is that this time Scott may pretend to be Jamie infront of the Old Ones and die, therefore calling his past version back. This way the Old Ones may think that the Sapling has already died twice and can't return this time but they will be tricked again and will be defeated once more. It is just a thoery though.

But then there would never be a Scott aging...

Plus why would AH do the same thing again? Why not make it different have them come up with something new! I don't want to read about the same battle twice in two different books.

yeah i agree with you there it would lose its novelty if it was just the same but i also agree with wht your tryin to say if scott replaced jamie they trick the old ones a second time but maybe they do a differerant trick this time

i think that hes somehow related to pedro, and as pedro is supposidly king of incas, which obviously was 10000 years ago ,  he has to sacrifice pedro and inti has to come, because it's a incas knife ..... probably not but thats what i think

Or could it be a weapon for one of five? In the past, they each had their own sword (I think it was a sword, I'm not completely sure). That could be Inti's, handed down by the Incas so that Pedro could receive it when he needed it.

Yeah thats possible, and it looks different to other people if pedro / inti hasn't got it , and thats why it's hidden .

maybe richard is a guardian aswell not as in like the 5 gatkeepers but a guardian to sort of keep anyone from the gate sort of do you get wht iam tryin to say??
