Matt was using both his and Pedro's combined energy or power. and he used all of it. the fatigue and pain probly came when Matt's body tried to compensate for the absence of the energy of two gatekeeper's powers.

No I think that 'the light' he had seen just before he passed out burned into his eyes and caused the blood to seap from his eyes. In other words the intensity of the light caused it.
