Well, Alex knows several different languages right? He doesn't neccisarily have to cuss in English. Instead, he might've sworn in Spanish, Japanese, German or French (the languages he knows).   rolleyes

but some people would still understand him swearing in other languages
in CHERUB the swearing is fine...its not even that bad- and the idea is that they're all teenagers, doing teenage stuff (not that I can say it in Mad Dogs grin)
in AR it's better he doesn't swear because Alex is a more controlled/calm/nice/quiet person, compared to someone like James
and AR is read by loads of little kids as well...like my sister at school in year 4, so swearing wouldn't be appropriate, whereas Mad Dogs, has a warning thing  on it "Not for Younger Readers" grin

that wasn't long at all, that was the length that we'd prefer for a post

anyways, i think swearing is overrated.  there are still a lot of teenagers that don't have it in their regulary vocab, so the fact that AH writes with no real ones, and only the mention of one occasionally shows that

 grin long posts take long to write...

swearing is overrated, because my some of my brother's friends who are five swear like no man's business...
still, I agree with you that there are many people who don't swear that much, like me as it doesn't really come naturally tongue
it'd be weird reading AR if there was swearing constantly (and might actually put me off Alex a bit)

I think Alex swears because there is no teenager I know that doesn't swear (Except for myself). To me, it's making Alex all the more real. It also shows his frustration and anger.

since it's a young author book mostly, AH doesn't want to be teaching kids, who don't swear, bad habits. their parents would not want to hear anything bad from their kids! angry

Hey dude I'm from the U.S. and have read all six. In fact I am waiting to check out the seventh. I have about Alex Rider for a long time. When I picked it up I couldn't put it down. And the cussing, without cussing it appeals to more audiences and will possibly stay in libraries.
