Why the heck didn't Mr. Horowitz release the origianal Devil's Doorbell, only tying up some of the loose ends (How the professor knew about the Old Ones etc), instead of releasing it as a "new" novel, with changes to the names and main characters?
 A reveiwer on amazon.com put it this way:

T"he names of characters and places have changed a little, but Raven's Gate is definitely the Devil's Door-bell. I feel foolish for having bought this book when I already read Devil's Door-bell. I didn't realize this was going to be the same book...... Books that did not sell well... and for good reason..."


I pretty much agree with that except that the reviewer apparently didn't even seem to like the original.

I thought Ravens Gate was very good.  But I haven't read the Devil's Doorbell so I cannot compare. huh My impression on this leads me to believe that the two were reasonably different though, weren't they?

Not really. A few name changes, there's no LEAF project, and it has some good parts which were left out of RG.

It is the first book in the old and out of print Power of Five. I believe that AH never finished the series, and they were crap so he started re-writing them.

You misunderstand me. The Author thought they were crap. Or perhaps just that he could do better. I'm sure I would like the Devil's Doorbell, though I can't get a copy.
