hypnotism, probably.  a bit of telepathy as well, getting inside people's brain and altering their way of thinking

and my guess is they're hiding in plain sight...assumed human form and infiltrated in our world

mind reading, or something? Bewitchary? They are powerful right? they can do every thing. Although the raven's gate was resealed, the old ones had perhaps had some contact with the world at the very moment the gate was open?

I agree with Rainbowstar (as usual!). Also, the Old Ones had "agents", the people who were working to open the Gates. So, those people could help them control bystanders...
