Lots of you seem to dislike the color. I don't mind it, it's how they designed the eye! Really bad!

Anyway, I think I've said enough about how much I hate the cover. I think the book will have 405 pages of story. AH probably just read that number off the last page. The non-story pages won't be numbered, and I bet he didn't count those.

Also, why do they make changes to the North American version? Why can't it be the same as the UK version. It really annoys me that they changed the name of Point Blanc to Point Blank. In the story the school was still called Point Blanc...doesn't make sense.

no, its treating americans like idiots. We can read american books right? so why cant americans read english and aussie books?

its because everyone thinks that american readers are idiots and dont understand words like "pavement"...is it not obvious that they will go "well, thats just the english word for side walk".

they do not need it translated for them. The whole american thing is just a waste of time and stupid in my opinion

I think it's not so much that we think americans are stupid... I think its because everything is like that, so for all intents and purposes (no offence to anyone) they ARE stupid... or at least, wilfully ignorant of anything that isnt american. They get completely stumped if you call the 'trunk' of the car the 'boot', or say you need 'petrol' instead of 'gas'...

And you say we can read american books so they should read english ones, but that's not how it works - america is sort of weirdly non-international with that stuff, it's like... We Are American! All Other Cultures Adapt For Our Ways If They Want To Interact With Us At All!!
For example, they pretty much dont - or at least very rarely - play british TV shows, or foreign TV shows at all. My friend from america had never heard of James Bond before coming here, and she finds it hard to watch english TV shows that we love and show her when she visits, because she cant keep up, because she's unused to the accent and humour. Maybe its not 'stupid', but its not helping them seem smart!!! They're sort of nationally wilfully ignorant. Everywhere else has been overwhelmed by american stuff, but they refuse to let substantial amounts of foreign stuff back in.

And they sort of insist that everything is translated into 'american' and that they have special editions and versions of everything. Its so bizarre, because - as you said - some things just dont make sense, at all!!, when you try to make them 'american'... *shakes head* weirdness.

There's this British TV show, Life On Mars, that an american TV studio liked, so did they just screen it in america? I think not! They remade the whole three season show, with different actors but (at first) the same plot. I mean, WHAT. THE?!?!??!??!?!!?!

actually, we do have a lot of brittish shows over here.
you just have to look on the right channels.
and ummmmm, i guess it is sorta stupid how we adapt everything, but its just that we have a ....."rough" history with britts, and we puposely change everything to be different from them.
like the driver's seat is on the left instead of the rite, we have intersections instead of those circle things that you go through.( although i think the east coast has those..)
so, ummm teah, it is a waste of time, but i guess its nessacary.( in a way)

you mean roundabouts? my hometown is refered to as the roundabout city. They are designed to slow drivers down but still keep the flow of traffic. In hobart there is not al that many. We still have plenty of intersections, unfortuantly.
roundabouts only keep the flow of traffic, IF PEOPLE BOTHER TO LEARN HOW TO USE THEM PROPERLY!!!
sorry, old people are fustrating, what is so hard about only giving way to your right? honestly, the amount of times ive ended up just going because someone just sits there giving away to a non existant car.
*cough* rant over

Its stupid because its still set in britain anyway, makes no difference if a few spellings are changed

though i dont disagree with the things you said i do feel like i have to defend them in some way you would be very suprised at the amount of british shows shown in america they have a whole bbc channel and why shouldnt they remake life on mars its not where its set that gives it is gravitas but its the writers and actors if they can do any near as good a job let them, not all americans believe that we should conform to the whole we are american u live by us rule but for those who do it might not be becuase they are arrogant but simply for the fact that america is the leading power in the world so they do have some form of increased power over us as a country

however i dont mean to write this to put anyone off or on their beliefs or opinions so if it annoys anyone or starts a discussion about this stuff then pls tell me and il take it down

Americans tried to redo Kath & Kim. I saw it. It sucked. Big time.

I dont think they change all that much in books. It doesnt matter a great deal if they write "pavement" or "sidewalk". I say both anyway, sometimes one sounds better than the other.
Although I don't think changing the name of the book is necassary. At least they didnt change point blanc completly like they did with harry potter.

Still, its because he has an american publisher, I dont think its so much they dont want to conform, more the fact that it is an american business and it wouldnt actually make sense for them to sell a completly british book

*sighs*

I didnt mean to start all this.

I just think it's utterly absurd because - as someone just said - AR is set in England. The characters are English. That is how they talk; that is the words they use. Americans trying to force their own culture on a book that - character and setting wise - has nothing to do with them is irritating and gives them (americans) an attitude as a society that is not at all flattering.

I know it's not a BIG change, between editions - just 'Mum' to 'Mom' and that - but that's sort of the POINT. Its not that big a difference!! WHY BOTHER?? I mean, how on earth do they do the american editon of Skeleton Key, with Alex having to remember to use american words, when he's been calling it 'math' the whole time anyway??!??!

And the happy-happy-Alex-LOVING CIA agents in SK make me LAUGH!!!!!! "Wow Alex! You blew up the boat!" *ROLLS EYES* It doesnt make any sense that way!

Not to mention the Point Blanc - Point Blank thing. What are they saying, that the subtle pun is beyond americans? Someone said they spell the place name Point Blanc in the book anyway - so what the heck is the point changing the title?

And I know they do show british TV shows in america, but it's very much just that - they have their own channel, they are 'British Shows', not just... TV. Like, here... TV is just... TV. British shows, American shows, Australian shows, the odd NZ show, it's all just, on TV. (And if you knew what they did to Life on Mars, you would not be defending it... they DESTROYED it.. made the whole plot go WHACKED... it's a show about a 21c man who finds himself in the 70s and when they remade it he started there and ended up on a spaceship or something... WHAT THE...?!?!?!?)

And the American Revolution was hundreds of years ago. Maintaining that attitude towards the brits nowadays is a bit pathetic. The World is The World - not America and Some Other Places that either Obey Us or Hate Us And Thus Must Be Crushed By Our Culture.

As for America being the world ruler - MAN that makes me angry - who says they have the right to (to quote AH haha) act as international policemen??

Grr.

But this is all utterly ridiculous and horrifically off topic. I.... hmm I was going to take this to Politics and Philosophy but there's little point hijacking another thread when this topic comes up all the time anyway... Im gonna make a new one for it... here's the link: http://anthonyhorowitz.com/msgboard/index.php/topic,5109.msg386430.html#msg386430

they arent the word rulers, they are a super power, there is a slight difference (Im not trying to be antagonising, I was just pointing out its exagtrated) I bet no one will be saying china is a world ruler when they become one

anyyyyway. America having a different version doesnt even affect me.

Does anyone have any idea how the media finds out about alex?I really dont see how they could of....

I think walker should release a preview or something!! I jsut want to read it already sad

I dont know (about the media)... Someone could have put lots of pieces together - the smudgy shots of Alex that keep leaking out? Or found out from someone who knows someone who was, I dont know, caught in the crossfire and saw a teenage kid haring around saving the world?

I think it'll be to do with the skiing resort/place (whatever they're called) though... because it (the book) starts there... and something has to happen there... when would Alex Rider ever have a peaceful holiday?? (LOL, a bit like asking when could HP have a quiet year at Hogwarts XD)

Maybe something dramatic happens at the ski place and someone there is a journalist and does some digging??
