I know this might be a stretch but the genre most reminded me of a Tarzan book/movie with the African settings, mentions of the wildlife, the croc trap itself, etc all remind me of a TARZAN movie! And a few of those had James Bond type thmes and outlandish villains not too disimilar to the one here. The Ron Ely TARZAN show also had these types of villains.
