Actually, I just re read it now and I'm more inclined to believe they were taken from her for a reason, not just kidnapped or something. It went like this...

Is Mrs Jones married?
She was...
In her apartment I saw a picture of her with 2 kids, what happened to them?
She lost them.
They died?
They were taken.

That's what I'm thinking. She probably neglected them when she got her job, then her husband leaves her and the kids would want to go with him rather than stay with her.
