So the first book in the New Heroes of Olympus series, The Lost Hero, comes out tomorrow! (In the US at least) I'll be getting it tomorrow but I don't know if I'll have time to read it yet.  Anyways, I figured we'd need a place to discuss it, plus I wanted to remind everyone it was coming out, so I created this topic.  Enjoy.   grin

Is the continuation of the Percy Jackson series? My sister loves them, so I might buy it for her.

I think it is a 'sequel series'.

Yes, the Percy Jackson series is over, but this new series will have some of the same characters (including Percy), they just won't be the main characters.  Basically, it's a spinoff.

*spoiler* Actually, Percy is the lost hero referred to in the title *spoiler*

EDIT:  So I have the book now and I think everyone will be excited with how thick and chunky it is compared to his other books.  It's 557 pages!  Also the title of the next book is The Son of Neptune.  It will be out Fall 2011.  (The title confirms many of my suspicions I think.)

Yeah I started a little of it earlier and It's good so far.  But I can't predict much about what's going to happen yet. undecided  It's got a unique setup though.  It switches who the main character is every few chapters.

EDIT:  I just finished the book. It was really good!  Much more thought out than the Percy Jackson series.  I really don't know if it should be called a separate series haha.  I mean it is a separate series for sure, but it is essentially just the continuation of the same bigger story.  Like I imagine if you took the Percy Jackson books and mashed them into one and then took these books and smashed them into one then these are just the sequel.  Basically, I'm trying to say that it doesn't feel awkward or like a spinoff.

Anyways, where he took the story was a really brilliant move and I love where the story is headed.  I just wish someone else would read it so I could discuss it further! haha

It's awesome Riordan just changed from his focus strictly on greek gods and incorporated the roman names also.
I just finished it's absolutely amazing. It might even top the percy jackson series one day. I love how he ties Roman Mythology into the Greek Mythology.

Sweet you finally finished it.  I think it's better than the Percy Jackson series as well.  I like Percy better, but I think Rick has just gotten better at writing now.

*spoliers*
So who do you think the seven of the Prophecy will be?
We know:
Percy, Jason, Piper, & Leo

which only leaves room for three.

I thought maybe Thalia would be included since she's not from either camp and is powerful, etc.  But I decided that she's not since she is from the same god as Jason (One's Roman, One's greek, but still) andI don't think there will be repeats since I see it as one extra powerful child from each god.  But then I got to wondering if there was a Roman version of the hunters of Artemis.

Then I thought Anabeth.  It seems like she should go because she's been such a big part of everything and she thinks she's going to go so she can see Percy.  But then I got to thinking and although she is the best daughter of Athena we've seen, she doesn't really have any special powers like the others do.  So she's a maybe for me.

And then Nico.  He seems like he would need to go.  He's a child from the big three and has the special power to raise the dead, but I'm just not sure if he  fits.  Unless they pick him up randomly along the way.

And then you have the Romans.  I think that Reyna will be there for sure since she got special mention.   And she'll need to be there to provide awkward tension For the whole Piper-Jason thing since she's probably Jason's old girl who he doesn't remember. (and possibly Percy's new girl since he doesn't remember Anabeth) And I think she'll probably be a daughter of Mars(Ares) or Apollo just to provide variety.  I especially think maybe Apollo since we haven't seen a major character from him.  And he is the god of the oracle so maybe her special power could be something with that.  Or maybe she can glow or something since he's also god of the sun haha.  But I think there will be at least three Romans (counting Jason and Reyna).

I'm also on the fence of whether or not I think the next book will be about Percy's whole time since he disappeared, or about Jason, etc. leaving for their journey and going to the Roman camp to get him.

Wow I got a little carried away there.

I think it will be about Percy's time at the camp in the beginning then I think Jason, Annabeth, Leo, and Piper will arrive. I think Percy, the previous four I mentioned, Reyna, and 1 more roman will be the seven in the prophecy. I can't wait till the book switches to Greece. Since the next book's title is The Son of Neptune it might just be about Percy's time at the Roman camp.

Well, there are 7 of them, so 4 from greek camp, 3 from Roman camp...

Greek:       Roman:
Percy        Jason
Annabeth      Huh
Piper         Huh
Leo

I know, I am looking forward to the next book...although I have realized a potential THIRD Percy Jackson Series...starring Jason before the switcherooney

I think that he should write at least one book of the story of Jason's past.  But he might not since we already know the general outline of events.

but on your list of people I'm still speculative about Anabeth.  I like her and she's important to the series and all, but she doesn't exactly fit like the others because she doesn't really have a special power that normal kids of Athena don't have.

You could see by how involved in this latest one she is that she will be involved in future ones...she is really smart...

I think there could be a good 3 books in Jason's story...
