UK: History vs Social Studies

In one part of this book, it mentions that Alex will have history, then math, THEN Social Studies. In the US, history and social studies are usually the same thing taught in the same class. WHat's the difference in England?

They probably just want to have a class that focuses soley on History rather than have it combined with all the others that are included in social studies. We had a seperate one for geography and sociology in high school and that is usually included in social studies.
So basically what I am saying is, social studies is a broad subject and the school must like to go into history in more depth.

yeah, I'm from the US too and we had separate history and social studies classes. in high school anyways. History is like past events and stuff and social studies is studying society and things, like learning about the system of government.

Yeah... in social studies we studied like, McDonaldisation, bills that were being passed and the processes of legislation, the way the Nazi movement became popular and why people thought it was right/joined it/went along with it... While in History it's people, places, periods, events... just History lol.
That said, we do Social Studies in 3rd and 4th form, and from 5th form up, it splits into History, Geo, and Tourism: the 'social sciences' dept. So it's not really the same situation...

i'm not sure i see the point of this topic
it doesn't seem very relevant to Alex Rider (well, yeah. He takes Social Studies in one version and History in another. And?) but i'll keep it open until it gets spammy. As soon as this gets off-topic i'm locking this and you can discuss whatever you want in the School thread in the General Discussion board.

Wow, really? so what do you do in Social Studies? (the point of it being odd is that for the most part, Social Studies overlaps History. As I said, for me, you do Social Studies when you're younger, then it splits into several - one of which is history.)

Well ... it's quite complicated because i take Social Studies in Arabic, and History in English. (yeah! tell me bout it!)
But basically in the Arabic one what we take is things like overpopulation, geography, things to do with the environment, how the government works, all that.
(mind you, the last year Arabic Social Studies was also split into two: History and Geography)
But this year that's what i'm taking the Arabic one ... plus History in English. French Revolution and all that. It's quite complicated because i don't even know what i'm taking later on.
Ah, well, BOT xD

I don't think we even DO social studies here... Citizenship? Is that it? I did that two years ago for an early GCSE. (Hehe! Geekiness! xD) and I got an A... But that was only for Gifted and Talented people... So yeah, my school doesn't do both xD

I read that and wondered too. I just guessed that they had history for the deep past and social studies for stuff like government types and current events.

i was wondering hte same thing!
i was thinking that social studies dealt with alex's own country, where maybe history covered more worldly material.
idk, good question!
