ONE CANNOT SIMPLY TANKCAT INTO MORDOR!

« Reply #45 on: January 09, 2009, 10:20:01 AM »

I know we get the impression through the books that Ian Rider had been training Alex since he was really young to be a spy.  But is this really the case?  Could it possibly be that Ian was sharing the only type of knowledge he had with Alex - type of bonding, doing the only things that he was really good at?  Or could it be possible that he was teaching Alex a lot of stuff to help him feel that Alex would be safer while he was away (they did mention in Snakehead that agents tend to fear more for their families than for themselves)?  Or was he really daft enough to consciously create a spy out of a 14-year-old?  Surely, with the knowledge that Ian had of the espionage world, he would not have chosen that as the ideal career for his nephew?  (They did mention in Snakehead that very few agents ever manage to retire...)

I don't know.  I must admit that I do find Ian Rider's motives for teaching Alex what he knows a bit overlooked.  I would love to know if there is more to that.  After all, it wouldn't be out of character for MI6 to be manipulating this into getting Alex to work for them.

Any thoughts?

I can't think that Ian Rider would want Alex to be a spy, especially as he knows the danger and knows that it killed Alex's father. I think you're probably right- it was just all that he did the things that he found fun and it just so happened that it tended to be extreme sports. It wouldn't be impossible that Ian Rider gave Alex so many opportunities to assuage his guilt over not being there. And certainly I can imagine things like Karate just being to vent off a little kid's excess energy.

Wouldn't put it past Alan Blunt to gently nudge Ian Rider in that direction though, anticipating Alex being a spy when he's grown up. He's certainly had plenty luck with Rider spies before and might relish the thought of another one.

The Karate could also be that Ian wanted Alex to be able to protect himself if need be.

Here's an overly anal question:

Why wasn't Operation Stormbreaker handled by MI5?

It was taking place on British soil, by a long time resident of Great Britain to make products for the British school system.

Why would the international arm of military inteligence take care of it rather than the national arm?

MI5 handle internal security issues primarily, where as MI6 is more involved in external covert operations and international intelligence.

There are actually about 20 'MI's. They're mostly boring apart from those two though. Cheesy

I learn everything from Wikipedia and Spooks!

hey im new here but i've read all the books but havent seen the stormbreaker movie and i have the answers to your questions. to the first question nobody knows wat her name really is not even alex himself the only thing she goes by is jack to the second question its probably because he wasnt expecting any trouble from damian cray or alexto the third question it doesnt say whether it was real or not but im guessing that was a reaction to the fact that alex was or should have been dying. it just seems that the last thought through his mind was his parents and he saw a mental pic of them from heaven which is possible if you belive in miricales in a way i hope these help and you can ask me any other questions about alex rider im open with answers. cheesy
