Death of a Killer

Was anyone else seriously mortified by the death of Yassen Gregorovich? Anyone? Anyone at all? Please say I'm not the only one who enjoyed reading about the blond Russian assassin...?
Just one thing about the circumstances under which his death occured... He is one of the world's best contract killers, right? He is uber-cautious and almost paranoid, right? So WHY THE HELL WASN'T HE WEARING A BULLETPROOF VEST, HM?!
I just don't get it... I mean, Alex had one and he's just a 14 year oild British spy... Yassen Gregorovich is a 35 year old experienced amnd skilled assassin who apparently wasn't wearing a bullet-proof vest... WHERE'S THE LOGIC IN THAT?! And I mean, I considered that maybe he was wearing a bullet-proof vest and it got pierced... but the bullet was only fired from a pistol and therefore would have to have been within extremely close-range...
Can somebody please explain the logic of this to me?! I mean, what was Horowitz thinking when he killed off the best evil/slightly good character in the whole series?

Well you know they want to give the book a sudden twist for the reader that they wouldn't expect, wanted to give the book some drama, I can understand why they did it, It's just hard for me to explain, anyways I liked yassen, he was cool.

He needed yassen to die so that yassen would tell Alex about Scorpia. Yassen wouldn't have done it otherwise

A valid point, but I still think Yassen (were it real) would have been wearing a bullet-proof vest... Also, I reckon he may have told Alex at some point, 'cause you can tell he'd been thinking about telling Alex throughout the whole series...
Then again, remember the whole 'John Rider lives' thing? Were, Rider faked his death for Scorpia and all that... and he got 'shot'... but he was actually alive... hm...
Oh, the possibilities!

He should have been wearing a bullet proof vest! But I also understand that he had to be dieing in order for him to tell Alex.

the thing is though...with him dying, all of us are talking about it! if he lived...we'd be more "meh" about him...death always becomes on a person

Oooooh, I'm not the only one with this feeling ... it's always like that with me ... I like a character and then he gets cut up/shot from a tree/poisoned etc. (Ok, then that's very likely cos I usually like bad guys).
Throughout Point Blanc and Skeleton Key I was looking for him on every page and I squealed when he turned up in Eagle Strike.
So damn unfair he had to die. He was so great
